Discover Benin with Ghana and Togo | 09 Nights / 10 Days | Accra

Day 01: Arrive Accra                             D
Arrive Accra meet and assist at the and Transfer airport to your hotel. Welcome drink and orientation.

Day 02: Accra City Tour                               B – D
After breakfast depart your hotel for a sightseeing city tour of Accra. You will drive through the administrative and economic districts of Accra, the capital of Ghana. Over 100 years old, this city has a blend of colonial and modern architecture that summarize her history. You will visit the W. E. B. Dubois Center for Pan African Culture, Independence/Black Star Square and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. After lunch in a local Ghanaian restaurant, you will end your tour at the Arts Centre where you will have an opportunity to use your bargaining skills to shop from an open-air market for artifacts from Ghana and West Africa.

Day 03: Kakum National Park – Cape Coast Castle                               B-D
After breakfast at your hotel, depart for a drive through the historic Denkyira Kingdom to Kakum National Park, one of the West Africa’s surviving tropical rain forests. Choose between a 2 kilometer nature walk through this forest to discover the wide variety of exotic floral species and the medicinal values they offer or traverse the canopy walkway which hangs 100 feet above the forest floor.
Enjoy a pleasurable lunch, then visit Cape Coast Castle. Built by the Swedes in 1653 and later taken over by the British, this castle also houses the West African Historical Museum. Experience the history of the slave trade, the impact of which is felt in Africa and beyond even today.

Day 04: Asanteman (Ashanti Empire)                                B-D
After breakfast, check out and depart for a drive through the forest zone to Kumasi, the seat of the legendary Ashanti Empire. After lunch, visit Manhyia Palace Museum, to obtain firsthand information on the legacies of the Ashanti Kingdom. The Ashanti’s have a famously regal history which dates back to 1700 and is evidenced by extraordinary relics and artifacts. Enjoy a drive through the city of Kumasi and see the many monuments dedicated to the memory of great Ashanti people. End the day’s tour at the National Cultural Center which features the Prempeh II Jubilee Museum and is home to the dazzling studios of traditional potters, brass and batik makers.

Day 05: Ashanti Craft Villages                                            B-D
This day is devoted to visiting the three famous craft villages in Ashanti: Ahwiaa (the woodcarvers’ village), Ntonso (the home of Adinkra) and Bonwire (the Kente weaving village). You will have the opportunity to see how African crafts are made and buy directly from the artisans who make them. After lunch, depart for a scenic drive through the forest zone to Accra.

Day 06: Accra – Cotonou                             B-L-D
After breakfast at your hotel, depart Accra for a scenic drive along the coast to Cotonou. Stopover in Lome for lunch. After lunch, continue the journey to Cotonou. Check-in and spend the remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 07: Cotonou – Ouidah (Voudoun Festival)                          B-D
After breakfast, depart for a visit to Ouidah, the cradle of African traditional religion. Join the local people of Ouidah as the nation (Benin) celebrates Voodoun Festival. This religious holiday honors the victims of slavery with solemn ceremonies of remembrance and wreath-laying at historic monuments. Elders, priests and priestesses perform ceremonies and make offering to the gods, seeking bountiful harvests and humbly asking for protection from evil influences. It is a joyous occasion, accompanied by colorful costumes and much singing, dancing and drumming.
You will have the opportunity to tour the temple dedicated to the sacred python, which is believed to give vitality and protection. You will also pay a visit to the sacred forest, which houses many shrines dedicated to various deities. Next, visit the historical Museum of Ouidah, located in a Portuguese fort built in 1721. This museum reveals Benin’s role in the transatlantic slave trade. Later, visit the “Port of No Return,” a monument built by the Benin government to commemorate the Africans taken from the Dahomey Empire. Return to Cotonou for dinner.

Day 08: Cotonou – Ganvie – Abomey                                B-D
After breakfast, be prepared for a sensational visit to Ganvie, a village built over water (and commonly referred to as the “Venice of West Africa”). Witness first-hand as the people of Ganvie carry out their daily routines in dugout canoes piled high with wares, transacting commerce with one another and with tourists. You will enjoy shopping on the floating market and taking a relaxing canoe ride on the waterways of this exotic village which is over 300 years old. After lunch, depart Cotonou for a drive 144 km north to Abomey, the historical capital of the great Kingdom of Dahomey. Visit the Royal Palace and its museum, featuring relics that tell the story of this centuries-old Kingdom. Return to Cotonou.

Day 09: Cotonou – Accra                                            B-L-D
After breakfast, depart Cotonou for Accra via Lome. Stop in Lome to enjoy lunch, then continue on to Accra.

After breakfast departure transfer to the airport to catch the flight for onward Journey.

PROGRAM – 2
Explore Benin | 09 Nights / 10 Days | Cotonou


Day 01: Cotonou- Porto Novo

Arrive Cotonou meet and assist and transfer to hotel.
After breakfast, we will depart to Drabo in Abomey Calavi, a managed forest where we will observe the Red-bellied monkey. The sanctuary is home to many threatened forest plant species in Benin. In the afternoon you will drive back to Cotonou for lunch. Later we will go to Porto Novo in “Jardin des Plantes” where we will see another kind of monkey.
Overnight will be at Hotel.

Day 02: Gnanhouizounmè Sacred Forest
After breakfast, meet the guide at the hotel lobby, today you will visit Gnanhouizounmè sacred forest, a dense flooded forest that is the refuge of a variety of wildlife species. Here you will have an up-close with a Red-bellied monkey, Tantalus Monkey, and Mona monkey. You’ll have the chance to discover the circuit “Wogboto”, the culture of Wémènou, the village history, and daily activities of the locals such as fishing, basket weaving, and agriculture. You will have a chance at the amazing architecture of the houses in Gnanhouizounmè.

Day 03: Gnanhouizounmè – Kikélé
After breakfast, you will visit the forest to watch the dining routine of the Monkey as you get entertained. You will brag a quick lunch before proceeding to Kikélé located in west Benin. You will have a detour at the sacred forest where you will see different species of wildlife. Continue with the drive arriving at Kikélé in the late evening.

Day 04: Kikélé
After breakfast, explore the village to learn about its history and culture. We will immerse the green forest to admire the rich fauna and flora where you will have an opportunity to observe the tame White thighed colobus, a majestic monkey where the local people consider as their ancestors. The Mona monkey could be also seen in the forest if we are lucky. You will also learn about several plants used by the locals as traditional medicine. Dinner.
Overnight at Guest House.

Day 05: Kikélé-Natitingou
After breakfast depart to Natitingou located in the northwest of Benin. This a long way of driving but with several detours and beautiful vegetation on the road. You will stop at Fulani villages to learn about the culture and history of the Fula people and to have a quick lunch.
In the afternoon we will arrive at Natitingou and visit the regional museum.
Overnight at the hotel.

Day 06: Pendjari National Park
After breakfast drive to Pendjari National Park, one of the most important animal reserves in West-Africa and a Unesco heritage. Upon arrival, you will have a game to have an up-close with lions, elephants, antelopes, warthogs, buffalos, and much more.
Dinner and overnight will be at camp

Day 07: Pendjari National Park- Natitingou
Today after breakfast you will have an early game drive for another animal experience and back to the camp for launch. In the afternoon you will visit the waterfall where you can swim and relax. before the sunset, you will leave the wild and back to Natitingou.

Day 08: Natitingou- Teneka
After breakfast, l drive to Boukombe to visit Tata Somba and Otammari people that have a very interesting culture. when a member of the group turns 10, they make hundreds of scars on their face called “tchoudanfas” using a thin blade. You will have lunch as you learn about their culture and history.
In the afternoon we will drive to Taneka for the traditional dance of excision.

Day 09: Taneka – Cotonou 
Today in the morning you will embark on a hiking adventure to discover old Taneka villages located on a mountain. The villages are made of roundhouses covered with conical roofs protected at their top by terra cotta pots. You will learn the history and culture of this ethnic group. In the mid-morning will go back to the hotel for early breakfast. We will drive back to Cotonou where you will be dropped at the hotel.

Day 10: Depart Cotonou
After breakfast departure transfer to Airport for onward journey.

Day 01 Arrive Cotonou
Arrival at Cotonou, meet assist at airport and transfer to hotel.
Overnight in Cotonou.

Day 02 Cotonou-Porto Novo – Cotonou (By Road) ( 41 kms / 1 hrs – One Way)
Proceed to Porto-Novo, also called Hogbonu or Adjatche. Arrive; visit Honme, the former palace of King Toffa, the nineteenth monarch of Hogbonu. Continue to the museum of ethnography displaying aspects of Birth, Life and Death with a fabulous collection of Gelede masks.Return to Cotonou. Drive to Abomey-Calavi. Aboard a motorboat, cruise the Nokoue Lake to Ganvie, Africa’s biggest stilt village. On arrival, visit the “Maison de la Francophonie”, a replica of Ganvie traditional houses.
Go the narrow alleyways between the stilt houses passing the Lovers’ Lane, the floating market to a typical Ganvie souvenir shop. Return to Abomey-Calavi and continue to Cotonou. Overnight in Cotonou,

Day 03 Cotonou – Allada – Ouidah (By Road) ( 87 kms / 1 hrs 37 mins appx.)
Proceed to Allada, origin of most kingdoms in southern Benin, also the birthplace of Toussaint Louverture, the Negro hero of Haiti’s ancestors. Join in the preliminary ceremonies of the voodoo festival including prayers, chanting and drumming by various priests from the area.
After a brief exchange wih King Kpodegbe, road to Ouidah, the voodoo capital city of Benin. Arrive in Ouidah; experience the Slave Road from the former slave market till the awesome Door of No Return on the beach that saw millions of Africans embark on slave vessels for the Americas. Scenic drive through the coconut grove passing fishing villages for beachfront Casa del Papa. Overnight in Ouidah.

Day 04  Ouidah – Cotonou (By Road) (38 kms / 1 hrs appx.)
Today, join in the official events of the voodoo festival, a religion with sixty million worshippers worldwide. Embark on a tour of Ouidah including the temple of pythons opposite the Basilica, Kpasse sacred forest dotted with many sculptures representing artist representation of many deities.
This shaded wood is where the second King of Ouidah, Kpasse got deified into a tree, still visible here today. We end our tour of Ouidah visiting the museum of History, a former Portuguese slave fort. Overnight in Cotonou,Benin.

Day 05 Depart Cotonou
Departure transfer to onwards destination.
